I'm a currently gay closeted medical student in a south american country undergoing serious political and financial problems. I'm thinking on applying for an internal medicine residency in the US in order to live in a normal and peaceful place, but I have several problems and doubts as to what to do with my life. I've been in a relationship with my boyfriend for 3 years and, though he is professionally capable, due to my country's devaluated currency and government bankrupcy he barely has any income to maintain his most basic expenses while I'm supported by my parents, and that has him depressed all the time. He wants us to go to another south american country ASAP and take me there with him, but I want to finish medschool and go to the US as a doctor's income there is great and I'm pretty sure I'll match with a lot of effort... The problem is that he is 25 and doesn't have an outstanding CV so as to get easily hired by a work visa sponsoring company, and, if I match into a residency program, the location of the same will be totally random and events complicate further. As my country doesn't support same sex marriage, I cannot marry him and get him a sponsored J-2. I would like to hear some advice from people who have gone through the same situation, and also, I would like to get some advice as to which southern states are the best for a gay couple (I don't like cold weather :( ) My options right now would be Arkansas (easiest choice), Texas or Atlanta, but I'm open to a northern state like Illinois or NY for example. I've heard that California is great for LGBT people, but they rarely accept foreign medical graduates so it's practically impossible for me to settle down there....
As for another thing, I haven't found anything conclusive on the internet about discrimination against gay doctors, is it an issue? Will coming out worsen my relationship with my co-workers?
