Op-Ed But OUR people will do it right.... (or, How to Judge a Law)

There's a theme in American political discourse that loves to pass laws in order to further an agenda, one that relies on "our people" to use the law correctly. While popular among Democrats for eight years it's in high regard by the GOP these days, as demonstrated by some in this forum.

But that way lies the loss of all we cherish (or should), because if a law can be used to further one side's agenda, it can be used just as well by another. As I posted in anther thread here:

"...ask yourselves what the people you most despise politically would do with a given law, and judge it on that basis. On that path, and only on that path, lies liberty."

Freedom will never, ever lie in giving government authority to tread on rights, because that authority will always, inevitably be turned around and used where some faction will use it to benefit themselves and no others. Freedom lies only in assuming the worst possible outcome of any proposed -- or existing! -- law and analyzing it on that basis.
