Does anyone get the "hipster" phenomenon?

A lot has been written about the hipster subculture, mainly negative.
Do any of you have any real experience of hipsterism, and do any of you have an informed opinion about them?

There are shades of hipsterism in The Netherlands, but I don't think we actually understand it.

e.g. was Kurt Cobain secretly the first hipster?
