Here's how it goes:
Ask one or more guys "Hey, how are you?" and then ask if they have a girlfriend. They will say either yes, no, or why.
If why, respond: "(shrug) I don't know, just asking."
If yes, "(shake head) Well that sucks, I was gonna give you my number (back away)." Or say "Never mind."
If no, proceed to step 2.
Ask "mind if I give you my number?" Have number already written on a torn piece of paper in pocket and offer it.
If yes say, "Nice, I like guys like you." (Say smoothly enough so that they figure you're interested and walk away).
If no say, "Eh oh well."
The goal is to see how many guys accept your number and how many text or call you. My hypothesis is that regardless of sexual orientation, a guy who is somewhat interested should take your number and/or try to contact you later.
