Why is mid/late 90s music hardly played on local radio stations? You'll hear 70s, 80s (it's easy to find 70s and 80s), 2000s, maybe some early 90s once in a while, and songs from other decades but it seems most stations rarely play songs from 1995-2000. I find it hard to believe that it wasn't a popular time in music or that it was the black sheep of the 90s and/or 20th century. I would say music from the 2000s sucks compared to the 1990s. Why is it that local radio stations seem to avoid that part of the 90s? It seems society now ignores the 90s decade of music as if it didn't happen.
Time Life over the years has made excellent compilations of every decade of music in the 20th century except the 90s. While I have found various 90s compilations over the years, there are very few, and they aren't as thorough in covering hits of that decade. There are way more 80s compilations and they cover way more songs. The few 90s compilations there were mostly covered songs from 1990-94 (early 90s) and the few that did cover the mid and late 90s weren't all that good or thorough.
The mid and late 90s was very unique, diverse, and eclectic when it came to artists and styles and genres of music all playing on the local Top 40/Pop Music stations back then, even playing songs (and hard to find songs) you can't find on lists of Top 40 charts and pop music charts in books and online.
Is it possible that most artists from the late 90s didn't want to allow their music to go to compilation albums because they want people to buy each and every album to collect the songs? This isn't true of artists from the 2000s and this decade on the several Now That's What I Call Music compilations.
Styles of music have come and gone but since the 2000s hip-hop and rap has never gone away and I don't think it ever will. I really don't see what people find so fascinating about those genres. In my opinion kids of today have poor taste in music or just settle for anything they put on the radio no matter how sorry it sounds. I guess anything can make a buck these days! Since 2005, most of the music and artists all sound alike, and there is very little diversity when it comes to differences, genres, and styles. They all sound the same to me. I can hardly tell them apart. They lack harmony, style, rhythm, melody, etc. and have terrible and stupid lyrics. It's all techno, computerized, not their real voice, echoey, no real instruments, and no talent. It doesn't sound like songs anymore.
