I've been a construction manager - field engineer for the last few years running construction projects. I have not done any design, although part of my job is make some/small changes to the design when I see necessary. After all, it is not always easy to superimpose what's on paper onto the real world.
I just got an email from my boss. He says there is a design team in the local corporate office that has an opening and they would love to have me join them.
I'm conflicted. On the one hand, it's actually a career booster, having the new experience and something else to put on my resume. But on the other, I've sort of carved out a niche for myself here.
You could say if I stay here I will remain comfortable and be on top of things. If I join the design team I will temporarily be a fish out of water but will be able to squirm to a new bigger pond... assuming I survive. I know lots of people who do well in one field but suck in the other.
What do you think? Yay or nay?
